Ignas Pavliukevičius

Residency - „Plow or not to Plow?“

Ignas Pavliukevičius is an alumnus of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and a doctoral candidate at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His research explores the relationship between humans and technology, as well as masculinity within a socio-cultural context. The artist seeks to bring these seemingly distinct themes together, emphasising the emotional dimension as a fundamental element of his artistic projects. His works, which focus on human interactions with smart technologies, examine the humanity of technological beings and our own emotional connections to them.

The focus of Ignas Pavliukevičius's residency research was the emotional relationships created by artificial intelligence models in artistic and other forms of interaction. Artificial Sentient Being is a prototype installation resembling a computer game, exploring how AI models generate emotional connections between an artificial sensitive being and the viewer. During the residency, the artist developed a computer simulation capable of learning from new data and adapting through interaction with viewers, allowing audiences to engage more closely with artificial life and attempt to form an emotional bond with it. The nature of this emotional connection, and the new forms of intimacy it creates, could be experienced first-hand at the Prãgiedruliai Creative Center. Alongside the installation, the artist also presented a publication developed during the residency, examining text-generation models and their ability to embody collective knowledge.

Ignas Pavliukevičius on his creative process during the Plow or not to Plow? residency:

"Works created during the residency were intended as a meeting point between human and machine, between feelings and algorithms. On 24th November, this became something of an experiment, through which viewers could enter a labyrinth of emotional interaction where digital beings and humans intertwined into a single existence. Here, within a simulation of reality, we encountered a new form of intimacy, a new way of understanding and experiencing the 'other' and the 'self'."

At the painting workshops led by Ignas Pavliukevičius, which explored the use of artificial intelligence tools and were organised for students of Mintis Gymnasium, two classes of pupils and art education teachers took part. The three-part workshop programme consisted of image generation using AI algorithms, a theoretical introduction to creative artificial intelligence and its applications in art and science, and practical painting sessions.

During the workshops, participants explored the relationship between AI-generated imagery and traditional painting. Through hands-on experience and an experimental approach, students examined the idea of co-creation: how can technology and humans become creative partners? What role do collective knowledge and cultural heritage play in this process? Participants were introduced to the use and development of creative AI tools, while the theoretical sessions were complemented by practical exercises and critical reflection. The programme concluded with a painting workshop, and the works created by the students were exhibited and presented at the Prãgiedruliai Creative Center.
