Paulius Šaparnis

Arts and Industries Residency

Highlights from P. Šaparnis’ residency presentation at the Panevėžys Bus Depot ("Panevėžio autobusų parkas").

Paulius Šaparnis is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance, installation, experimental projects and theatre. His practice combines art, science, technology and research-driven approaches, with works often presented in unconventional spaces that encourage active audience participation. Over more than a decade of creative practice, he has focused on authenticity, collaboration and meaningful engagement with viewers. His works have been presented in Lithuania and internationally, receiving recognition through cultural awards and nominations in theatre and film.

Bus–Synthesiser is an interactive sound installation created by artist Paulius Šaparnis during an artistic residency at the Pragiedruliai Creativity Centre in collaboration with Panevėžys Bus Park. As the outcome of the residency, a retired bus was transformed into a work of art and given a new life as a unique musical instrument. By entering the bus and touching different handrails, visitors could trigger a variety of synthesiser sounds and create their own musical compositions. Combining art, technology, industrial heritage and sustainability, the project encourages active public participation and creative exploration. Bus–Synthesiser demonstrates how artistic residencies can reimagine obsolete infrastructure and create meaningful cultural experiences for local communities.

The project was funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Panevėžys City Municipality.
